We are pleased to inform you that we have added new data sets into our EU ETS Database, regarding the new entrant reserve (NER) and transitional carbon allowances.

Transitional allowances

Power generators must since 2013 buy all their allowances, with exceptions for some countries. Eight of the Member States which have joined the EU since 2004 – Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland and Romania – have made use of a derogation under Article 10c of the EU ETS Directive which allows them to give a decreasing number of free allowances to existing power plants for a transitional period until 2019. These free allowances are called transitional allowances.

In return for transitional free allocation, the 8 countries concerned have drawn up plans setting out investments to be financed through the free allocation with a view to modernising their electricity sectors and diversifying their energy mix. The overall amount invested must match or exceed the value of the allowances allocated for free.

transitional

In particular, investments should be made in:

  • retrofitting and upgrading their infrastructure
  • clean technologies
  • diversifying their energy mix and sources of supply.

For more information on this mechanism, please visit the European Commission website.

NER

In 2015, 78 million transitional carbon allowances were allocated to 205 power plants. Moreover, 14.2 million reserve allowances were granted to 453 EU ETS installations. These reserve EUAs are distributed to new installations as well as to some installations increasing their production capacity.

Data on transitional and NER allowances (from 2013 to 2015) can be viewed at installation level in our EU ETS Installation Database, and at company level in our EU ETS Company Database.

PRESS RELEASE

London (23 April 2015) - Carbon Market Data, a company providing carbon market research and IT services, has launched a new product, the GHG Reporting UK-Listed Company Database, which supplies information on the carbon footprint of UK-listed companies.

Based on Carbon Market Data's research, Shell, BP and Evraz top the list of greenhouse gas emitters among companies listed in the United Kingdom. Shell and BP, two major oil and gas producers, and Evraz, a steel maker and mining company, emitted in 2013 respectively 83 MtCO2e, 56 MtCo2e and 54 MtCO2e. These figures include direct emissions (from the combustion of fossil fuels) as well as indirect emissions (from the use of electricity). As an illustration, BP's greenhouse gas emissions in 2013 equals the carbon footprint of Ireland. Similarly, the combined greenhouse gas emissions of Shell, BP and Evraz correspond to the carbon footprint of Netherlands (191.7 MtcO2e in 2012).

"As we are approaching the UN Climate Change Conference at the end of this year, it is important to provide investors the possibility to identify and anticipate the carbon risk of their investment portfolios" points out Cédric Bleuez, director at Carbon Market Data. The UN Climate Change Conference objective is to achieve a legally binding and universal agreement on climate, from all the nations of the world.

Carbon Market Data recently launched a similar database disclosing carbon footprint information on South Korean companies, and announced it will expand its data offerings in the near future.

Companies participating to the EU emissions trading scheme have so far reported emissions of 1.8 billion tCO2 in 2012 (scope: 27 EU countries). Moreover, the 775 airlines currently included in the scheme have up to now declared having emitted a total of 70 MtCO2 (scope: intra-EU flights). These new data have been added to our online EU ETS Database and can be viewed and accessed by registered users.

Below is shown, for the year 2012, the updated list of the 15 biggest CO2 emitting airlines participating to the EU emissions trading scheme.

The European Commission released 2012 verified EU ETS emissions data today. Preliminary data show that CO2 emissions from the 27 EU countries were down by 1.4 % from 2011. These new data have been added to our online EU ETS Database and can be viewed and accessed by registered users.

Regarding the biggest CO2 emitters of the scheme, RWE saw its emissions grow year-on-year by 12% at 164 MtCO2. Its British subsidiary, RWE npower, emitted 50% more CO2 in 2012, with 25.4 MtCO2, whereas its Ducth subsidiary, Essent increased its CO2 emissions by 33% at 14 MtCO2. Cheap coal and low carbon prices largely explain these results.

The 28 new sectors of activity of the EU ETS Phase III (as according to the EU Directive 29/9 of 23 April 2009) have been added to our EU ETS Database. Currently, about 350 installations have been included in these Phase III sectors. Moreover, 85 new installations and about 50 new airline companies were added to our EU ETS and Aviation ETS databases.

New sectors include in particular the aluminium and chemical industries, as well as carbon capture and storage activities.

Two new greenhouse gases have also been added to the scope of the EU ETS, i.e. nitrous oxide (N2O) and perfluorocarbons (PFCs).

To see the list of the 28 new sectors, consult here the Annex I of the EU ETS Directive 29/9/CE.

Following the recent data release from the CITL, we have added Iceland (4 installations) into our EEA ETS Database.

This article by the French newspaper Le Monde on the steelmaker ArcelorMittal is based on figures published by Carbon Market Data. Our proprietary information on corporate CO2 emissions and carbon portfolios is included in our EU ETS Companies Database.

Carbon Market Data is pleased to announce the launch of a new dataset giving detailed information on the CERs (Certified Emissions Credits) and ERUs (Emissions reduction Units) used for compliance by companies included in the European emissions trading scheme (EU ETS).

This newly available service offers high-value information to carbon traders and analysts on the CER and ERU trading strategies used by EU ETS companies.

The new dataset enables users to:

  • search detailed information on the CERs and ERUs surrendered by the 900 largest EU ETS companies
  • analyse the CER and ERU sourcing strategies of companies with information on the CDM and JI projects related
  • for each company, view aggregated data by project type (HFC, N2O, landfill gas,...) and host country
  • assess the carbon risk profile of companies in relation with their carbon sourcing strategy (project type, primary/secondary CERs/ERUs, issuance success rate,etc...) and provide a benchmark index

Company: Vattenfall
Vattenfall_CERs_ERUs

Detailed data on the EUAs (EU allowances), CERs and ERUs surrendered for 2008 and 2009 compliance by individual installations are now also accessible on our online data platform, the World Emissions Trading Schemes Database. These data can be accessed, under the 'EU ETS' and 'EEA' tabs, in the installation interface.

Data on CERs and ERUs used for compliance by EU ETS companies can be found under the menu 'COMPANIES' of the World ETS Database. In the company's interface, just click on the link entitled 'CERs and ERUs surrendered'.

The free version of the EU ETS Companies Database includes all iron and steel companies.
